The healthy life

The relaxation traditions of the Skodsborg country house continued when doctor Carl Ottosen founded Skodsborg Badesanatorium in 1898.

He had studied health and physiotherapy in the US, and the sanatorium quickly became popular for its expertise in physiotherapy and a preventative approach with spa treatments and healthy living. Carl Ottosen was particularly interested in elements such as light, air, water, movement, rest and diet, which is why Skodsborg, with its location in the middle of nature, was perfect.

It is these Nordic traditions that Kurhotel Skodsborg continues today – with healthy living as the framework for our many offers within spa, exercise, food and, of course, the classic spa treatments.

Skodsborg – a healthy part of Denmark’s history

When you check in at Kurhotel Skodsborg, you are also checking into a piece of fantastic Danish history that is all about retreating for a while and re-energizing your body and mind.

In 1852, King Frederik 7 bought the country house Skodsborg with his wife, Countess Danner, and together they spent their long, relaxing summers here until his death in 1863. Villa Rex was built in 1857 so that the king could hold councils of state, meetings and banquets without leaving the scenic surroundings of Skodsborg. Villa Rex has been renovated with respect for history and is now used for parties and meetings.

Our green journey

At Kurhotel Skodsborg, we are aware that sustainable transformation takes time, that it is a learning process and that there will always be a need for optimization. With our beautiful location between forest and water, nature has always been a big part of our DNA and the cornerstone of Dr. Carl Ottosen’s values of physical and mental health.

Fresh air, clean water, light, movement and nutritious food form a fundamental set of values at Kurhotel Skodsborg that will forever make us dependent on nature. Taking care of our planet is therefore important to us and we try to incorporate sustainability into every element of the hotel’s cycle and future – from the food we serve in our restaurants to the way we use energy. Although we are still evolving, we hope to inspire others to embrace our process and the initiatives already underway.

Initiatives

We try to consider sustainability in all parts of the hotel’s cycles and have made a decision to take a more focused approach to our responsibility and actively contribute to improving the wellness culture. For ourselves, our guests and the climate.

Our laundry supplier is eco-certified and uses only organic products and energy-saving washing programs.

We collect rainwater, which we use to water our plants and vegetable garden.

The water we serve is plain fresh and pure Danish tap water, and we always recommend drinking tap water if possible. Instead of bottled water, we offer a reusable sugarcane water bottle in our Spashop that can be filled again and again.

The use of single-use plastics such as product packaging is significantly reduced and our food is delivered in reusable containers.

We sort waste into 13 categories and try to stay ahead of regional requirements. This year, among other things, we have implemented a container for textiles.

To avoid food waste, we have our biowaste upgraded to biogas in collaboration with BioTrans and HCS.

We weigh the weight of our food waste so we can regulate and adjust portions and purchases as needed.

More than 30% of the food we serve is organic, seasonal and sourced as far as possible from local Danish producers.

The fish we serve is MSC certified, which means it is caught by a certified sustainable fishery, is not endangered and is only caught in quantities that allow the stock to remain healthy and productive.

Towards a greener future

In addition to optimizing our energy and food consumption, we have launched a number of sustainable initiatives to contribute to Kurhotel Skodsborg’s green journey.

We always keep our green values in mind in our work, and our environmental certificates are proof of some of the goals we have already achieved and what we strive for in the future.

From January 1, 2024, we are proud to announce that we have purchased renewable electricity from wind turbines.

Since last year, we have organized Clean Up Days at Skodsborg twice a year – first in the spring and then in the fall on World Clean Up Day, as we want to contribute to a worldwide initiative.
