We are proud and happy to assist in launching the book ”Skodsborg Badesanatorium – Persilleslottet som blev Nordens største kursted” (Skodsborg Sanatorium – The parsley palace which became the largest spa hotel in the Nordic region) by Anders Bank Lodahl and Jørn Hansen.
Keep Your Body Healthy
By the end of the 1800es, long before nutrition, smoking, alcohol and exercise set the order in the health debate, health apostle and medical doctor Carl Ottosen promoted a healthier lifestyle in exactly these areas. His ideas originated from the USA where the health movement challenged the established medical world with excited messages about how to keep the body healthy in a natural way by avoiding artificial stimuli from the modern civilised life and stick to a vegetarian diet, clean water, exercise and fresh air. Ottosen was excited by the health message of the Adventist Church and had learnt his methods at the sanatorium owned by health reformer and cornflakes inventor J. H. Kellog in Battle Creek, USA.
The Sanatorium which turned into ”The Largest Spa Hotel in the Nordic Region”
In 1898 Carl Ottosen created Skodsborg Badesanatorium where chronically ill and almost well people were treated with electricity, baths, light therapy and fresh air. Instead of coffee, tobacco and alcohol Dr Ottosen prescribed bodily exercise and a vegetarian diet to detox and rebuild the body. The sanatorium was received with a headshake by most of the Danish medical world. Nonetheless quite a few guests sought out the sanatorium and in the 1920es, after several extensions, it was named “The largest spa hotel in the Nordic region”. The book covers the development from the inauguration in 1898 till 1992 where the Augustinus Foundation took over the place and nowadays is behind the modern Kurhotel Skodsborg.
