Recipe for Skodsborg’s Paleo Bread

paleo smørrebrød bread the lobby recipe pastry chef healthyQuite a few of our guests have asked for the recipe for our tasty – and healthy – paleo bread, and our Head Pastry Chef, Susie Høj, is more than happy to share it.

Recipe for Skodsborg’s Paleo Bread

100 g pumpkin seeds
150 g sesame seeds
150 g flax seeds
5 eggs
100 g sunflower oil
10 g salt
100 g peanuts (deskinned)
75 g almonds (deskinned)
75 g almonds with skin
50 g hazel nuts

Mix everything in a food mixer till the eggs thicken in order for the nuts not to settle at the bottom (approx. 5 minutes). Pour the mix into a bread baking tin, greased with oil.

Bake the bread at 170 degrees Celsius for approx. 35 minutes.

Enjoy!

We invite you to read Nutritionist Gitte Høj’s explanation on why paleo bread is so healthy for you.

Mathias Nielsen: ”CrossFit is an Investment in Yourself”

Kurhotel Skodsborg spa fitness crossfit workout mathias nielsen”You do press-ups like a girl,” an elderly woman told our CrossFit Instructor, Mathias Nielsen, the first time he tried his hand at this popular type of workout.
“I was over-weight as a teenager and lost 25 kg from lifting weights – so I was muscular but not very flexible. CrossFit just makes so much more sense than lifting weights. You make movements which the body is built to make – and you grow stronger on the stuff that you do in your everyday life.”

“We Have Fun – and Improve”

“The participants in my classes have their say on the workouts,” says Mathias Nielsen.
Mathias listens to the participants’ requests and makes an effort to compose programmes where everybody gets the result from the workout that they want.”
Mathias adds: “The participants tell me that they like my classes because we work hard but they have fun – and they improve their level of fitness.”

A Typical CrossFit Class with Mathias Nielsen

“I like to play loud music and I focus a lot on creating a good atmosphere and good energy in my CrossFit classes,” says Mathias Nielsen when he is to give an example of one of his typical CrossFit classes.
He works from a fairly fixed template.
First, all first-timers are introduced to the team.
“We perform as a team,” says Mathias.
“I often work with partner-workouts, meaning that the newbies have a friend from the beginning. Someone who will help and motivate them.”
Then comes the warm-up – preferably something fun which will bring a smile to the participants’ faces.
And finally the workout of the day (WOD) – most often 30 minutes, sometimes with 15 minutes of lifting weights, and sometimes with a so-called “finisher”, meaning that all the participants are “used” to the max.

Mathias Nielsen’s Background

Mathias has been lifting weights for about ten years and doing CrossFit for about five years.
He has had the below training

  • CrossFit course from CrossFit Copenhagen
  • CrossFit Level 1

Mathias has just begun competing in CrossFit competitions and will, among other competitions, participate in First Timers Vol. 11 on 28-29 September 2018 in Køge and in Gladsaxe CrossFit on 1 November 2018.

Celebrating 120 Years with ”The Healthy Life”

Local lore has it that our founder, Carl Ottosen, rode his bike along the scenic “Strandvejen” more than 120 years. He was intrigued by the derelict buildings across from the beach in Skodsborg, enquired whether they were for sale, and the rest is history. Our history…
Dr Carl Ottosen had studied health and physiotherapy in the USA and opened Skodsborg Sanatorium on these premises on 4 May 1898.

The Eternal Principles for “The Healthy Life”

The sanatorium was recognized for its expertise within the area of physiotherapy and for its preventive approach to spa stays and healthy living.
Carl Ottosen’s principles for “The Healthy Life” were quite simple: you need light, air, water, nutrition, rest, and exercise – and plenty of it.
His expertise lives on at Kurhotel Skodsborg, where we have further developed his philosophies into new, efficient treatments, fulfilling the desires of modern man to take care of oneself, stay in great physical shape and get the most out of life.

“The Healthy Life” Wins International Accolades

We delighted that, as we celebrate our 120 years jubilee, these principles are not only still relevant in our modern, high-paced society but they also win international accolades from the most experienced spa and wellness experts in the world.
The prestigious Spa Guide 2018 published by TATLER MAGAZINE, known as “the world’s oldest and best magazine”, has just awarded us the title BEST FOR A ‘NATURAL HIGH’ and named us “One of the 7 best spas in the world in 2018.” And in March this year the equally prestigious Conde Nast Traveller Spa Guide 2018 named us BEST FOR A REBOOT.

Casper Gammelmark: ”You Will Become Stronger and Improve your Technique”

“I followed Rich Froning, a.k.a. “The Fittest Man in History”, on YouTube. He was awesome and his exercises inspired me,” says our CrossFit Instructor Casper Gammelmark about his first experiences with CrossFit.
Casper was a high-level competitive table tennis player and felt that the weight training, which had been organized by the team’s physiotherapist, was too boring. He was captured by the competitive element in CrossFit and these days he participates in CrossFit competitions and training camps all over the world.

A typical CrossFit Session with Casper Gammelmark

“I always begin my sessions with a light warm-up followed by going through the technique in the exercises,” says Caper Gammelmark, when asked to tell about one of his typical CrossFit sessions.
The actual work-out varies in duration, pattern and movement, typically mixing body exercises, machines and weight lifting.
Casper will often round off the session with a cool-down, ensuring that the participants get rid of the lactic acid in their muscles.
The participants in Caper’s classes are especially enthusiastic about his efficient programmes as well as the great advice he offers on techniques and the correct movement patterns. Further to this they emphasise that they become stronger and improve their techniques.

Casper has the below training

  • CrossFit instructor (Level 1)
  • Eleiko’s weight lifting instructor course
  • Team Danmark’s instructor training

TV HOST FELIX SMITH: ”I GET MORE ENERGY IN MY EVERYDAY LIFE”

Felix Smith health programme work out saunagus jens thygesen

“My work life is quite stressful and I need to take in a lot of new information every day. The health programme at Kurhotel Skodsborg where I work out with, among others, Thomas Rode, and participate in “SaunaGus” means that I get more energy in my everyday life,” says TV Host, Felix Smith.
Felix is known from the TV programmes “Voice” and “Denmark has Talent” and has recently landed his dream job hosting “Go’ Aften Danmark” (Good Evening Denmark) on Denmark’s largest TV channel, TV 2.
At home Felix is also quite the busy bee with two sons aged 3 and 9, and his wife, Marie Schmidt, who writes cookbooks for children and feeds 100 children every lunch time in a day care institution.
Felix’s boyish charm is one of the reasons the Danes love him but he recently turned forty which means that “you stop and take the time to analyse your life situation”.

A Unique Tailor-made Health Programme

As Felix Smith was making his mid-life status he chose to have one of the unique, tailor-made health programmes, which Kurhotel Skodsborg offers in collaboration with MD Jens Thygesen from Thygesen Health.
The programme takes its starting point in Felix, his life situation and his everyday life. It includes a health examination and in-depth conversations with MD Jens Thygesen as well as our unique fitness test followed up by advice from a personal trainer.
Normally our Nutritionist, Gitte Høj, would also contribute to the programme but Felix’s wife Marie employs her professional chef’s knowledge about healthy food. “We have kale every day,” says Felix with a glint in his eye, so this was not judged to be necessary in Felix’s case.

“The Programme Motivates me to Work Out and Eat Healthy Food”

”We Danes do not look up our GP unless we are ill, and it is not even possible to have preventive health examinations at this level at a private GP’s,” says Felix Smith.
Felix’s initial examination with, among other tests, a full blood count as well as ultrasound scans of his liver and his neck artery showed that everything was “all round good”.
And now, six months later, it is all round even better!
Felix has, however, chosen to continue the programme, saying: “The money for the programme is well spent. The measurable results motivate me to work out and eat healthy food.”

”I Have Not Been Ill One Single Time”

“I work out two to three times a week with Thomas Rode or one of the other instructors. I have worked out with all the instructors and they are all great,” says Felix Smith.
Membership at Skodsborg Spa Fitness is part of the programme and Felix has become especially fond of SaunaGus – and preferably with our reigning Danish champion, Henrik Baunkjær Sørensen.
“I have not been ill one single time, since I began working out here, despite the fact that I am exposed to kindergarten bacteria and what have you every day,” says Felix. In his opinion SaunaGus should be a major part of the credit for his strong health.
“I have googled it and if you enter a 100 degrees warm sauna and jump into ice cold water afterwards your body thinks you are about to die and boosts your immune system.”
He especially recommends SaunaGus in the evening.
“If I do it in the morning I simply get too tired but an evening “gus” ensures me a great night’s sleep,” he smiles.

Bonus Info

Felix Smith is the mastermind behind our most popular paleo ”smørrebrød” in The Lobby: ”Felix Smith Special” with avocado, falafel and humus.
“That’s the advantage of being married to a chef,” he smiles and says about the healthy best seller: “This is as sinful as it gets at our place.”

Kurhotel Skodsborg Takes it All at ”Cake of year 2018”

årets kage 2018 konditor konditorlaug erik kroun susie høj frederik holst benthin the lobby

If you have a sweet tooth a visit to our The Lobby could be a great idea.
At the annual Confectioner’s Championship, “Cake of the Year”, on Saturday 10 March 2018 at Hotel Crowne Plaza in Copenhagen, our young pastry chefs took 1st to 4th place. And you can taste all the cakes in our The Lobby…

Young, Ambitious Pastry Chef won 1st place

23-year old pastry chef and chef’s apprentice, Fredrik Holst Benthin, took 1st place in ”Cake of the Year 2018”. He won with “Sunshine”, a dream-like creation with passionfruit curd on ginger biscuit decorated with lemon sour cream. Frederik is a trained confectioner; he won The Nordic Championship in 2015 and has been a member of the Danish National Pastry Chefs-team for three years.
His high professional ambitions made him not only become a chef’s apprentice at Kurhotel Skodsborg’s reviewer-praised gourmet restaurant, The Restaurant by Kroun, but still compete in this unofficial national championship.

“A Joy to Watch Young People Develop”

”I am immensely proud of the first place at “Cake of the Year”-competition. The last couple of years I have made it to fifth place twice, so it feels great to finally win the competition. The fact that my colleagues from Kurhotel Skodsborg win second, third and fourth place only makes me more proud to be part of such an amazing team,” says Frederik Holst Benthin.
”It is a young and very competent confectioner’s team we have at Kurhotel Skodsborg and I am almost bursting from pride over the results they have achieved at “Cake of the Year”. It is a true joy to watch when young people develop and have the ambitions and ability to think outside the box,” says Mai Kappenberger, CEO at Kurhotel Skodsborg.
Erik Kroun, Head Chef at Kurhotel Skodsborg, has prioritised a strong cake and dessert profile as part of the spa hotel’s gastronomic profile, and the above results definitely prove that he is successful…

The Runners-up at “Cake of the Year 2018”

The other winners from Kurhotel Skodsborg were:
SILVER – 2nd place: Mette Sophie Olsen, 25 years, trained pastry chef from the famous Danish pastry shop, La Glace. Mette participated with “Miss Verbena” – white crunchy base with lemon verbena, raspberry jelly with lemon mousse and a coconut sponge.
BRONZE – 3rd place: Caroline Flyvenring Andersen, 19 years, pastry chef apprentice.  Caroline participated with ”Camomille” – short crust with elderflower and lemon mousse, white chocolate and fresh thyme.
4th place: Line Kürstein Wolter, 25 years, pastry chef. Line participated with ”Pflaume” – plum, blood orange, honey and sour cream mousse on crisp biscuit with a hint of liquorice and pecan.
Susie Høj, 27 years, heads the confectioner’s team and participated with ”The Root,” – blackberry, eucalyptus and liquorice – but didn’t finish among the ten first places.
All the four winner cakes can be enjoyed in The Lobby at Kurhotel Skodsborg, either as part of a true ”hygge” experience in front of the fire place or as ”cake-away”.

About the Cake of the Year-Competition

Cake of the Year is an annual competition arranged by Copenhagen Confectioner’s Guild.
2018 was the 34rd year that a selected group of highly trained Danish confectioners was gathered to compete in what must be the sweetest competition in Denmark. In 2018 more than 100 confectioners participated in the competition.
The winner is awarded DKK 10,000 as well as the right to exhibit the Copenhagen Confectioner’s Guild’s challenge cup at his or her work place till next year’s winner is found.

ANNE-LOUISE HAARBY: HATHA YOGA GIVES INNER PEACE, MENTAL BALANCE AND A SURPLUS OF MENTAL RESOURCES

hatha yoga mental balance stress coach

“My mission with teaching hatha yoga is that the participants get greater peace in mind and body; and that the calm and balance can spread when they go back to the real world, “says yoga teacher and holistic consultant Anne-Louise Haarby.
“I can help you provide insight and movement so that you can find your own direction in life. Hatha yoga helps to provide peace of mind, mental balance and a surplus of mental resources in a daily life, where ‘breathing spaces’ have almost disappeared.”

HATHA YOGA MED ANNE-LOUISE HAARBY

“My job is to balance the nervous system and prevent stress, which means that I switch between being physical and relaxing – “the accelerator and the brake.” A mirror of how our everyday life should look like: Being present – taking a break – being present – taking a break,” says Anne-Louise Haarby about her hatha yoga classes.

“We begin the class by being present the room (focusing on breath), then we’ll go deeper (possibly with a ‘body scan’) to let go of stress and tension. Then the physical movement begins. This means, that it becomes easier to stand in yoga positions and go deeper into the stretches. Slowly we open up so the “prana” – life energy – can move around in the body and mind. The class ends with relaxation  – “savasana” – which for most is one of the hardest, but the most important thing in yoga and meditation.

“I AM IN LOVE WITH THE LITTLE BREATH”

“Among other things, yoga has taught me to breathe, and now I’m totally in love with that little breath. It’s simply the key to our nervous system,” continues Anne-Louise Haarby. “When you breathe in, you span the entire upper body. When you breathe out, the body relaxes.”
She elaborates: “In our society we often experience stress, racing thoughts and too tense bodies. Here the breath have a soothing effect.”

A FUNDAMENTAL INTERNAL PEACE

Anne-Louise likes to draw on her own experiences and says: “For many years of my adulthood, I forgot to breathe, which gave birth to stress and other diseases. Today, I can not help breathing ‘right’. I remember my ‘breathing spaces’ every day so even if everything around me is chaos, I have a fundamental peace of mind. It’s that kind of calm I hope I can pass on.”

Inge Sandager: ”Yin Yoga Makes Your Body Feel Better and Ensures Internal Calm and Balance”

inge sandager balance yin yoga skodsborg suite kurhotel spa fitness

”I experienced an amazing calm and clarity, enabling me to zero myself, let go of worries and feel freedom,” says Yoga Teacher, Inge Sandager, about her first experience with yoga.
“At first, however, I found that it was the most awkward experience I had ever had; and the so-called “down-ward dog”, which is supposed to be a relaxation pose, was downright unpleasant and made me feel nauseous… “.
Inge Sandager chose to continue doing yoga, adding: ”Yoga – and yin yoga in particular – gives me a dimension beyond anything other forms of exercise can give me. I get energy, focus and inner calm in one go.”
The desire to pass on this boon to others made Inge train to become a yoga teacher.

Yin Yoga Focuses on Mindfulness

“Yin yoga leads your body into deep relaxation and calm, which is the key to restitution and de-stressing as well as releasing deep fascia and ability to concentrate,” says Inge Sandager.
She highlights three specific benefits from yin yoga

  • You learn to create space and volume in your body through slow movement and stationary yoga poses which improves your movability
  • You learn to control your breathing which ensures you calm and clarity
  • You bring your consciousness into focus and balance and your energy into flow
Yin Yoga with Inge Sandager

”In my yin yoga classes you will be guided into the yoga poses on the floor, while focusing on your breathing or, as we yogis say, prana,” explains Inge Sandager.
Inge focuses on the principles for yin, its energy and movement based on three main principles about “Grounding”, “Holding” and “Relaxation”.
She elaborates: ”We stay in relaxed poses for one to five minutes, whereby you achieve deep and calm stretches, which will make your muscles, joints and connective tissue more flexible. Yow will have the opportunity to turn your gaze inwards for a while and experience harmony and freedom from physical as well as mental stress.”

Yoga Classes with Inge Sandager at Kurhotel Skodsborg

We invite you to participate in Inge Sandager’s yin yoga classes at Kurhotel Skodsborg every Friday at 4.30 pm.

Inge Sandager’s Yoga Training and Background

Jens Bache: “Astanga Yoga Helps You Find Balance in Your Life”

astanga yoga jens bache undervisning

I was huffing and puffing. But afterwards it was fantastic – like breathing freely for the first time ever,” says Yoga Teacher, Jens Bache, about his first experience with yoga about 20 years ago.
Jens Bache was in the middle of a traditional career pattern and a co-student at Berkely University, California had lured him into participating in a yoga session.
“I found it difficult to relax in my busy everyday life,” explains Jens. “I could bike and go for walks in the forest but that was primarily in the weekends. The yoga sessions a couple of times a week and a daily yoga practice at home gave me the peace of mind I was looking for.”

Astanga Yoga Helps You find the Balance in Your Life

”Astanga yoga is a great, allround practice for everybody who wants to  find balance in their life,” says Jens Bache.
He elaborates: “It helps your personal development and helps you find the extra energy to get into a good physical and mental shape.”
Jens happily recommends the book “Yoga Mala” by Pattabhi Jois (which he has translated into Danish) for yogis who want to learn more about the theoretical and philosophical aspects of astanga yoga.

Astanga Yoga for Men

”Men are often sceptical about yoga but I experience that they often use astanga yoga as a supplement to more explosive forms of exercise, like running, cycling or CrossFit,” says Jens Bache.
“By learning to use their breathing in a conscious way and build heat from within they discover that they can loosen their muscles and achieve great physical balance when compared to the more explosive movements.”
“Men often like the slow exercises and being guided in quiet and relaxed breathing.”
He smiles: “Often they almost fall asleep during the final, relaxing exercises.”

Astanga 1 and Astanga Mysore

Jens Bache will begin teaching astanga yoga at Kurhotel Skodsborg from Saturday 19 August 2017.
He will teach two levels: Astanga 1 and Astanga Mysore.
For Astanga 1 the teacher will guide the students so they learn how to move to the breathing as well as the method and the positions. All the students will follow the same rhythm and it is  a good introduction to astanga yoga for those who have not tried it before.
Astanga Mysore is for the students who know the breathing exercises and the positions so that they can work in their own rhythms while the teacher guides them individually. The students will work with developing their own practice at home between the sessions.

Yoga Classes with Jens Bache at Kurhotel Skodsborg

You can participate in Jens Bache’s classes at Kurhotel Skodsborg as follows

Jens Bache’s Yoga Training and Background

Jens Bache experienced yoga for the first time at UC Berkeley in California in 1997. When he returned to Copenhagen he participated in his first workshop in 1999 and has since participated in workshops in Sweden, Italy, Finland, India, Portugal, Norway and Switzerland. Furthermore he has arranged workshops and retreats in Denmark.
In 2003 Jens travelled to Mysore to learn from Guruji at the KPJ Ashtanga Yoga Institute and has since visited the institute once a year to maintain and expand his knowledge.
Jens is one of the founders of Astanga Yoga Skole København, which he still owns and manages. He has translated Sri K. Pattabhi Jois’ book ”Yoga Mala” into Danish and is one of the masterminds behind the documentaries ”Guruji in Copenhagen” and ”Sharath in Copenhagen”.
Jens studies Indology – the teaching about Indian history, literature, philosophy and culture – at the Copenhagen University, supervised by Professor Kenneth Zysk.

PALEO SMØRREBRØD – TASTY ‘MEDICINE’

smørrebrød open sandwich healthy paleo food the lobby

Some claim that smørrebrød, or open sandwiches, is the only truly Danish contribution to the world gastronomy. Covering dark rye bread with your preferred meat, fish or spread is an age-old Danish tradition, but became a celebrated luxury treat in the Danish bourgeoisie in the 1890s, about the same time as Kurhotel Skodsborg was originally opened. Thus it only seems fitting that our chefs have re-interpreted this unique Danish delicacy, updating it into a paleo version.

Paleo bread ensures you  unsaturated fats and e vitamins

The traditional Danish rye bread, normally used for smørrebrød, has many qualities, but by exchanging the rye bread with paleo bread, we ensure our guests a large dose of the unsaturated fats and e vitamins (full of antioxidants) which are healthy, and essential for a lot of your body’s functions.
Paleo bread mainly consists of whole kernels, whole nuts, seeds and egg. The healthy fats are especially important for absorption of important fat-soluble vitamins, your joints, your blood circulation and your cholesterol level.
If you choose our avocado smørrebrød you “double up” on the health benefits from unsaturated fats and important antioxidants.

Paleo smørrebrød is the perfect between-the-meals-snack

When you feel squeamish after your workout, a wellness treatment or in the middle of the afternoon paleo smørrebrød is the perfect between-the-meals-snack (as opposed to sugary cakes or even fruits) as the fats ensure you lasting energy levels, and proper nourishment.
Our founder, Dr Carl Ottosen, to a certain extent considered healthy, preferably raw, food as medicine; and it is truly in his spirit that we have introduced the paleo smørrebrød.
Only, to our minds, our ‘medicine’ is tastier and more aesthetically pleasing than the late Dr Ottosen’s.

More information about paleo smørrebrød

You can enjoy paleo smørrebrød in The Lobby – every day from 12.00 noon to 4.00 pm
We invite you to browse the smørrebrød menu under THE LOBBY, and to find more information about Nutritionist, Gitte Høj, who contributed to this post.

LONE HUNÆUS: ”KUNDALINI YOGA ENSURES YOU PRESENCE AND PEACE OF MIND”

kundalini yoga men lone hunæus hatha ashtanga flow meditation

“It was as if lightning struck,” says Yoga Teacher Lone Hunæus about her first experience with kundalini yoga.
Lone had many years of experience as a yogi (someone who practices yoga) and had travelled to Costa Rica for a 200 hour course to qualify as a yoga teacher.
One of the goals of joining the course was to get acquainted with different types of yoga – and finding her preferred type of yoga.
Lone had left a challenging, but very interesting, job as CEO at an advertising agency. For an extended period she had felt that sea change was needed in her life, and kundalini yoga turned out to be the answer…

Kundalini yoga reduces stress and gives peace of mind

“Stress is one of the main threats to our health nowadays and one of the big challenges is to be aware of your body’s signals,” says Lone Hunæus.
“In kundalini yoga we focus on being present in the body, in the movement and in the present. Through simple – yet very efficient – exercises and powerful breathing we prepare the body for meditation.”
Lone adds: “Every class is composed of yoga exercises, stretching and meditation. The exercises strengthen the body, release emotional tensions and reduce stress.”

Kundalini yoga is very tangible and ensures immediate results

“In my experience kundalini yoga is especially appealing to men,” says Lone Hunæus.
She smiles: “Men tend to be fairly competitive. Often they have done sports which have been physically challenging, and have made their muscles short and stiff. Thus many men dislike entering a room, primarily filled with women, who are able to perform some exercises and positions, which they can’t possibly dream of emulating.”
“The exercises in kundalini yoga are fairly specific and resolute. The energy circulates; the participants feel their bodies in a new way and quite quickly achieve the peace of mind they aspire to.”

Yoga classes with Lone Hunæus at Kurhotel Skodsborg

You can participate in Lone Hunæus’ classes at Kurhotel Skodsborg as follows
Monday – 3.30 pm Hatha yoga – 5.00 pm Kundalini yoga
Tuesday – 8.00 am Hatha yoga – 09.30 am Kundalini yoga
Thursday – 08.00 Hatha yoga – 09.30 am Kundalini
Learn more about the different classes – and sign up – under GROUP FITNESS CLASSES

One-on-one sessions with Lone Hunæus

Lone Hunæus has recently begun teaching private courses, especially for professionals with an ambition of finde inner peace and presence in a busy everyday life.
“I know what it is like to be caught up in the rat race,” says Lone, “and professionals find it a relief that I meet them eye to eye.”
Contact Lone at lonehunaus@hotmail.com if you would like further information about her one-on-one sessions.

Lone Hunæus’ yoga certificates and background

Lone Hunæus has passed the below yoga certifications
Kundalini Yoga (2-year course in Sweden – 400 hours)
Yoga Alliance (200-hour course in Costa Rica)
Hormone Yoga for Diabetics (50 hours)
Hormone Yoga (50 hours)
Ashtanga Yoga – Series 1 (50 hours)
Furthermore Lone Hunæus was one of the founders of the association of Danish kundalini teachers.
Lone has a master in marketing from Copenhagen Business School and has worked as a project manager and CEO in the advertising industry.

ENJOY OUR WATER BAR IN THE SPA

vand med agurk mynte lime citron spa wellness sundhed

Staying hydrated and drinking water is very important for your health. Drinking enough can help you loose weight, as well as keep your skin glowing and help your kidneys detox your body. But water doesn’t just have to be boring and from the tap. At the spa we have now opened a brand new water bar – drink tea, still/sparkling or infused water. Infused water we say? Herbs in water? Herb-infused water can actually have a lot of benefits for our health…

Fresh mint

Helps your digestion and is a good idea if you feel bloated or stressed.

Fresh lime or lemon

Has a great, fresh taste. It also helps to lightly detox your body. We recommend you drink it in connection with a SaunaGus experience.

Fresh cucumber

It is a great idea to drink water with cucumber to add vitamins and minerals to your diet, it curbs your appetite and will help skin stay smooth (cucumber is also used in a lot of skincare products).

The new water bar is just part of what you get access to in the spa. So, if you would like to detox, de-stress or get away from the city, we invite you to book a Spa Day.

That is my training philosophy.”

“The Right Cure” – Review of The Restaurant by Kroun in STATUS

michelin restaurant by kroun anmeldelse status gastronomi nordsjælland kurhotel Skodsborg

”North Zealand has a new gastronomic beacon. Kurhotel Skodsborg opened ‘The Restaurant by Kroun’ in late January with a kitchen that doesn’t compromise on anything and must be a candidate for a Michelin star,” writes Editor in Chief, Nils Finderup in the March edition of the magazine STATUS.
Nils Finderup awards The Restaurant by Kroun six stars out of six possible.

Nils Finderup elaborates:
Since 2012 Kurhotel Skodsborg has spent millions of kroners on bringing the old hotel up to international standard. They have succeeded with the spa, the meeting facilities, the hotel itself and the bar. Now it’s time to heighten the gastronomic quality and for this purpose star Chef Erik Kroun has been brought in. With a past at Michelin-starred restaurants Kong Hans and Søllerød Kro he knows what it takes to fulfill the ambitions; and he seems to have had free rein to create his own restaurant, which, quite appropriately, bears the name ‘The Restaurant by Kroun’.
The restaurant is beautiful, high-ceilinged, a pleasant sound level, round tables and chandeliers of American antlers. The brown and white colour scheme reminds you of A.O.C., and that is not the worst restaurant to be compared to. Elegant cutlery, glasses and polished carafes from Danish design houses like Georg Jensen and Holmegaard testify that all details are in place.

Full house

But we are, of course, mainly here for the food. Guests are invited to choose between five courses at DKK 700 or eight courses at DKK 900, the latter menu offering the option of a wine menu at the same price.
However, you can upgrade the menu to ‘Full House” at DKK 2,000, which includes aperitif and water as well as coffee and sweets upon the biggest menu with wines. That’s the one we choose. From the outset the style is Nordic, and they know their business. The dishes arrive in a steady flow, and they demonstrate diversity in the kitchen which is only found in the greatest of kitchens. My co-diner is a trained chef, and rarely has she nodded so often in approval of a menu. One of the high-lights is something as extraordinary as an egg yolk with grilled greens and a sauce of cod roe.
“It’s no big deal to grill a steak of the best quality but inventing a composition like this one is what our trade is all about,” she concludes.

All Bull’s Eyes

The other dishes entail main ingredients like mussels, sweetbreads, Danish black lobster, cheeses and sorbet on goat cheese. All is pure perfection, but our favourite is a unique fish dish with cod, butter sauce, three varieties of roe and roasted Jerusalem artichokes with parsley. The cod has been pan-fried to perfection and enters in a perfect symbiosis with the different textures from roe and vegetables, just as the sauce unites all the impressions. We also have to highlight a juicy pigeon, which, demonstrating the self-confidence of the kitchen, is served with feet. That is a novelty but delightfully unpretentious.
The wines are a story in their own right. Our sommelier succeeds in catching the spirit in Erik Kroun’s dishes with one bull’s eye after the other. His wines never outdo the dishes but supplement and improve the overall experience. Even the harsh PSI vintage 2012 tames the dramatic pigeon feet with beetroots and star anise. We round off the dinner with great coffee, home-made cakes, madeleines and several varieties of chocolate containing up to overwhelming 100 %.
Admittedly DKK 2,000 is in the higher end of the scale but so is the quality in North Zealand’s new gastronomic beacon. Seen in the rotating light of going all the way, ambitions, abilities it’s an experience we can only award six stars.

We invite you to read the entire review in the magazine STATUS.
Or read more about the menu – and book your table – at The Restaurant by Kroun.

Health in Body, Soul and Heating Supply

Mai Kappenberger Kurhotel Skodsborg vedvarende energi klimavenlig nordisk e.on

“At Kurhotel Skodsborg you will from next year be able to turn up the heat in your hotel room or stay an extended period in the steam room with a healthy conscience. The spa hotel is, in collaboration with E.ON and Danish Renewable Energy, establishing a huge heating pump system which will deliver 75 % of the company’s heating,” writes Journalist Julie Ring-Hansen Holt in the most recent edition of the E.ON magazine.

Energy and Climate Friendly Energy Supply

The magazine is published by E.ON Denmark A/S, which is part international E.ON, one of the world’s largest investor-owned energy companies with about 33 million customers. 90 % of the energy E.ON produces in the Nordic region originates from sustainable or climate efficient energy sources.
E.ON Denmark will deliver Kurhotel Skodsborg’s new, green energy supply which potentially will deliver 75 %, or more, of the spa hotel’s heating through a heating pump system, pumping ground water from the ground and using it for heating and cooling.

Shows the Way and Spreads the Word about Green Energy

“The entire world looks towards the Nordic Region when it comes to sustainable energy, and with this system we can help show the way and spread the word about green energy,” says our CEO, Mai Kappenberger in the article.

”Qigong Ensures You a Strong Body and Strengthens Your Immune System”

qi gong tai chi mikael steinhausen personal training kurhotel skodsborg strengthen immune system

”Qi gong is a Chinese health system which activates and creates fluidity in the lymphatic system. This means that you achieve a very, very strong body, which becomes less receptive to illnesses and your immune system is strengthened,” says our Personal Trainer Mikael Steinhausen.
Mikael Steinhausen has a background as a gymnast and has practiced kick-boxing at competition level for years. He has practiced a lot of hatha yoga and has always made sure to exercise his body and take inspiration from different training systems; systems which he combines when he teaches.
He was so impressed by a Body-sds-session in 2010 that he chose to complete the three year therapist training and one of his specialties as an Instructor is qi gong.
He explains,” You make gentle movements and static exercises which follow your breathing and small strokes, especially on the chest, in order to cleanse your organs.“

”Qi gong is for everybody”
Qi gong originates from the 4,000 year-old Chinese health tradition. “Qi” means “energy” or “breath”, while “Gong” means “cultivating”. The practitioners develop their physical condition as well as their mental balance. The exercises are partly breathing exercises, as the lungs are considered the centre for “Qi”, partly easy gymnastic exercises.
Different versions of qi gong, of which the most famous is probably tai chi, are practiced by millions of Chinese people every day in the early mornings in public parks and similar places.
Mikael Steinhausen elaborates: “Qi gong is for everybody – young or old, female or male – who want to achieve a strong body, become less receptive to illnesses and strengthen their immune system.”

K-LIFT, OUR MOST EFFICIENT FACIAL TREATMENT

K-lift efficient facial treatment kerstin florian anti-age charlotte torpegaard

We are proud to be able to offer the unique K-Lift treatment, which ensures quick, visible results.
The treatment is an advanced system for efficient facial treatments, which energizes, tightens and rejuvenates your skin. The secret behind the efficiency of the K-Lift treatment is a specially developed machine, which employs kinetic energy to counter-act the processes which age the skin.
The K-Lift treatment has been developed by our close collaboration partner, Kerstin Florian, acknowledged world-wide for their exclusive, trend-setting beauty products.

K-Lift treatment is efficient because:
Further to peeling, facial massage and a face mask K-Lift treatment combines three non-invasive anti-aging technologies

  • Red Led light emitting diodes (light energy)
  • Impulse micro-currents (kinetic energy)
  • Transdermal delivery

The treatment affects all of the skin’s layers with a visible result, among others

  • The muscles in your face will be toned and lifted
  • Your production of collagen will be increased
  • The lines in your face will be reduced and your wrinkles will be softened
  • The contours in your face will be firmer

“Movement & Mobility makes you feel light – and grounded… “

mikael steinhausen movement & mobility personal training body-sds yoga
”In our modern time and age we overload our bodies simply because we don’t get enough physical exercise,” says our Personal Trainer Mikael Steinhausen.
Mikael Steinhausen has a background as a gymnast and has practiced kick-boxing at competition level for years. He has practiced hatha yoga and has always made sure to exercise his body and take inspiration from different training systems; systems which he combines when he teaches. He was so impressed by a Body-sds-session that he chose to complete the three year therapist training and one of his specialties as an Instructor, Movement & Mobility, is partially inspired by Body-sds qufei.
“Movement & Mobility is fundamental training, where we aim to strengthen and center our joints while increasing their flexibility. The training system has been developed to increase our body awareness; you can call it body therapy in movement, where you yourself work with your body,” he explains about his Movement & Mobility classes.
He smiles,” Even if it sounds self-contradictory, you become more grounded while feeling more light… “.

”The Body is Rebuilt instead of Broken Down”
A class in Movement & Mobility begins with “the seven phases”, which warm up all the joints – from your big toe to your cervical vertebrae. Then the Instructor moves on to the “the playful exercises”, which strengthen your motor skills, and “US exercises”, which are somewhat similar to yoga poses.
The training can have a therapeutic and releasing effect as well as create balance in your body and mind: it strengthens the foundation of your body, which means that you will make progress in your physical training, whether you exercise for fun and relaxation or you are a professional athlete.
Mikael Steinhausen says about Movement & Mobility that ”the training is created in order to maintain human beings in our time and age.”
He elaborates: “Movement & Mobility is for everybody – old and young, women and men – who want to achieve better body awareness as well as physical and mental balance. The body is rebuilt instead of broken down and you will have more spring in your step… “.

The Par Force Hunting Landscape in Dyrehaven is UNESCO World Heritage

The Hermitage Palace, Dyrehaven, par force hunting, bicycle, sightseeing, Northern Zealand

Very few people know what “par force hunting” is. Yet, the unique – and extinct – hunting form ensured the beautiful landscape in Northern Zealand a place on the prestigious list UNESCO World Heritage sites in July 2015.
The parforce hunting landscape in Northern Zealand includes the nature reserve Dyrehaven (our “back-garden”) and The Hermitage Palace.

”Unusual and well-preserved”
The UNESCO committee says that the par force hunting landscape in Northern Zealand is an unusual and well-preserved example of how the European Baroque principles are applied to forested areas. UNESCO is the UN’s organization for education, science, culture and communication.
The par force hunting forests are wide spread and include the southern part of Gribskov, The Greater Dyrehaven and Jægersborg Hegn & Dyrehave.
King Christian V separated the forests into sections, divided by numbered straight lanes in a combination of star formation and square grids, which cut over each other. This way, hunters on horseback were able to overview where the game was situated.
The royal hunting party would then, on horseback and with specially trained dogs, chase a large red deer stag for hours until it was totally exhausted. At this point the King, or one of his privileged guests, would kill the deer with a hunting knife called a hirschfænger (stag-catcher).

Hunting Lodge for Resting and Intimate Dinners
The Hermitage Palace was constructed between 1734 and 1736 by Architect Laurids de Thurah under orders from King Christian VI. The King would use the palace for resting when hunting in Dyrehaven and for entertaining his guests with well-presented and intimate dinners. From the windows of The Hermitage Palace the hunting party was able to enjoy the view over the ocean and follow the hunt.
Today the palace is used by the royal family for hunting lunches and other special occasions.
From 2010 to 2013 The Hermitage Palace has been thoroughly renovated. The work has now been finished and the small hunting castle’s unique, well-preserved interiors are presented with the same splendour as in the 18th century.

Experience the Par Force Hunting Landscape and The Hermitage Palace
The Hermitage Palace and the unique par force hunting landscape is a leisurely ten-minute bike-ride (3.4 kilometres) from our front-door. If you would like to experience the par force hunting landscape on your own we invite you to rent bicycles at our reception.
You can also participate in a guided tour at The Hermitage Palace – or arrange a private showing – from 1 June to 31 August.

Mist Sauna (SaunaGus) is Amazing Relaxation and Well-being

mist sauna saungagus relaxation tina andersen mindfulnessMist Sauna is a form of therapy which utilizes warmth and ethereal oils to affect body and mind. It is performed by a trained Mist Master who plans the process, doses the oils and allots the warmth with a towel. Mist Masters all have their unique style. Therefore you may have very different experiences depending on the Mist Master who performs your mist sauna.
Mist Sauna is typically performed in three sets of increasing intensity, interrupted by short breaks, where you have the possibility of cooling off and drink some liquid.
“It is limited how much research has been made into the effects of mist sauna but ethereal oils are said to have each their effect – relaxing, cleansing and/or refreshing. Some experts claim that mist sauna aids the segregation of waste through skin, liver and kidneys and strengthens the immune system, “ says one of our most experienced – and popular – Mist Masters, Tina Andersen.
Tina Andersen adds, “Most of our guests, who try mist sauna, experience a fantastic feeling for relaxation and well-being.”

Below Tina Andersen explains the different versions of mist sauna which we offer at Kurhotel Skodsborg.

Morning Mist with Ocean Dip
Morning Mist is aroma therapy and mindfulness in a sauna, where a Mist Master employs ethereal oils on the hot oven and distributes the oils in the sauna with a towel. Piyana: “Svaroopa Yoga keeps Your Spine – and You – Eternally Young”

piyana pommer svaroopa yoga coach personal trainer training

”You will die, but you never grow old if you work your spine,” quotes our Yoga Instructor, Piyana Pommer.
Piyana is specialized in Svaropa Yoga as this form of yoga relaxes your tailbone and sacrum and thereby the spine. Svaroopa Yoga is a meditative, soft and therapeutic form of yoga, which can be practiced by everyone.
She says: “Svaroopa is yoga without injuries for all age groups, it even helps your restitution after you have had injuries.”
Adding: “I guide the participants in my classes into the exercises. It is not in the physical but in the internal. The participants in my classes tell me they find inner peace. Mentally they learn how to let go and be present.”

Find Inner Peace with Svaroopa Yoga
Svaroopa means ”finding your inner self” or “be your own bliss” in Sanskrit. And this was exactly, what Piyana did, when she began practicing Svaroopa Yoga to find inner peace in a busy everyday life with three children and a fulltime job.
Piyana was so impressed by the results from practicing Svaroopa Yoga that she chose to take a three-year yoga education from Master Yoga Foundation – Home of Svaroopa Yoga in the USA. Piyana’s teachings take their starting point in a holistic outlook, and she has supplemented her yoga education with training as Coach, Shiatzu Masseuse and Reflexologist.
Personally Piyana stays in shape by walking, bicycling and – once in a blue moon – training in a fitness centre. But yoga almost makes physical exercise superfluous.
Piyana elaborates, “When you learn to relax your muscles, you experience that your muscles become stronger.”

Allan Torp, Bungalow5: ”A Wonderful Stay”

allan torp bungalow5 design spa fitness saunagus hotel

“It was my first stay at Skodsborg and not my last, that’s for sure. If you want a day away from home, sink in, re-boost your body, eat healthy food, swim in the ocean, then this is your spot,” writes Design Aficionado, Allan Torp, from the cutting-edge design site, Bungalow5.dk.

A Very Hot Experience
Allan Torp began his stay at Kurhotel Skodsborg with a new, eye-opening experience: SaunaGus (mist sauna).
He explains:
“Luckily for me the day of arrival was amazing, I had just been for a 6k run in Dyrehaven and was driving the Audi TT, so I arrived in style, just in time for SaunaGus. Aroma therapy in the sauna. The “Gus Master” works with aromatic oils on the hot sauna oven. An amazing experience – a very hot experience. I started sitting on the top level, which was just too hot, especially when the Gus Master used his towel to swing around steam in the sauna. I mean it felt like a blowtorch aiming at you. I finished it all off with a dip in Øresund, just outside. Very nice.”

A Contemporary Hotel with a Unique Spa
Allan finishes his story from Kurhotel Skodsborg saying:
”Kurhotel Skodsborg is a contemporary hotel with unique spa, fitness facilities and breathtaking views. My room, designed with Scandinavian style, was facing the water, which didn’t make my stay worse.”

“Light, Air, Water – Finding a Healthy Holiday in Copenhagen”

2015.Heather on her travels_the jetty at Kurhotel Skodsborg

“Light, Air, Water. These are the perfect ingredients for relaxation and recuperation on holiday. In our busy lives, we need moments to stop, rest, just gaze at the horizon. Holiday time provides the longed for opportunity to refocus on our health and wellbeing, ” writes acknowledged Travel Blogger, Heather Cowper, on her popular travel blog Heather on Her Travels.
Adding “Perhaps you’ll find those moments at Kurhotel Skodsborg near Copenhagen and take home a little piece of that health and wellbeing with you.”

Light and Air by the Sea
Heather Cowper enjoyed her time in our spa, and our selection of healthy Dr. Ottosen juices as well as our more indulgent take on the classic British afternoon tea, Tea with Georg.
But it seems it was our location by the ocean which pleased Heather the most
‘”I especially love to be beside the sea because of the soft light, the play of reflections on the water and the wide skies as you watch the horizon. The sea is hypnotic and therapeutic with a different aspect to enjoy in every season. I love the summers of Scandinavia with warm days spent amidst nature. It’s no surprise that the area of North Sealand just north of Copenhagen is a favourite for Copenhageners to spend their summers by the sea.”
